An interview with Oran Lasocki at MÜHLE London
We caught up with Oran Lasocki, head barber at MÜHLE London, to find out what makes a good haircut, his favourite moments of ceremony and thoughts on Triumph & Disaster…
THE MÜHLE PHILOSOPHY
Combining industrial precision with the best craftsmanship and highest design standards, MÜHLE is an icon for traditional wet shaving tools. Launching their London flagship store in 2018, the brand is now home to one of city's best barbershops (as described in GQ) and a true haven for all things grooming and wet shaving. Found in their exclusive multi-brand section and LG floor barbershop, Triumph & Disaster aligns closely with the brand’s core values of ‘’quality, craftsmanship and a pioneering spirit.’’
THE MÜHLE BARBERSHOP IS PRETTY TRANQUIL, WHEN IT COMES TO THE CHOICE OF MUSIC DO YOU LET THE CUSTOMER SET THE VIBE? WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?
I am very much into my music, I listen to absolutely everything, and during my time within the shop I ask my clients what they’re listening to and I’ve then curated a playlist that plays everyday. It’s a mixture of chill and upbeat songs to maintain a fun and relaxing atmosphere, if you’re interested here is the playlist.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD HAIRCUT?
The consultation is essential, asking what they do with their hair, what they are looking to do with it and one other question that I feel that gets overlooked is what they do for a living. Asking them what they do for a living will help you establish what is appropriate for their day to day life.
WE'RE BIG ON MOMENTS OF CEREMONY AND THE HABITS THAT COME OUT OF IT. WHAT CEREMONIAL RITUAL HAS TRANSFORMED YOUR LIFE?
I wake up early in the mornings so I can have a relaxing start to the day listening to either a podcast or album I am enjoying along with a nice cup of coffee.
TAKE US DOWN MEMORY LANE, WHAT'S BEEN THE BIGGEST HAIR/ GRROMING FAIL?
The one biggest hair fail I can remember, I was a part of, it was the 90’s gelled spikes. Everything about it was absolutely horrendous, think Gareth Gates…
MOST ICONIC HAIR STYLE?
It is simple yet effective, but I think the most iconic haircut is the buzz cut. Whenever anyone does it, celebs etc. it's always big news. It is a timeless style.
WHAT DREW YOU TO T&D?
Their selection of products are small, but they’re all amazing at what they do, their hold and their finish are the perfect amount that you need. My favourite product of theirs is the Sea Salt Spray, Karekare Tonic, it provides the perfect amount of hold and natural feeling to the hair, not leaving it gritty like other salt sprays or grooming sprays do.
FINALLY LET'S FINISH WITH A HOT TOPIC, THE MULLET: HOT OR NOT?
If done correctly and on the right person it works, but since the pandemic and the increase of home made mullets it’s a no from me!
